Registration for the Langley District Summer School
2008 begins

Information required when registering:
- Student’s legal name, English name if one is used
- Phone number, address, parent/ guardian(s) name(s) and phone
number(s)
- 9-digit Personal Education Number (PEN) is required for all credit courses
(available from your high school counsellor)
- School and District attended 2007-2008 and where you plan to
attend in September 2008
How to register:

- In person: at the Langley Education Centre Office,21405A - 56th Ave., Langley (payment by cheque to Langley District Summer School,
cash, Interac, MC, Visa, or AmEx)
- **NOTE** Do NOT use the LSS front entrance. The LEC entrance is at the NORTH side of the EAST parking lot.
Additional information necessary to register for ALL credit courses:
- Report card as proof of having taken the course prerequisite
and the mark achieved and/or a letter of permission from your
home school. (Adults require only proof of the course prerequisite).
- International students must bring a letter of permission signed
by their Secondary School ISP coordinator (ISP Coordinators have copies of the necessary form)
- Photo ID (student card, driver's license, passport) must be shown to teacher
**Course credit will not be granted without this information**
Fees & Textbook Deposits:
- Tuition fees must be paid in full at time of registration
- Fees may be paid by cheque made payable to Langley District Summer School, cash, Interac, MC, Visa or AmEx (post-dated cheques not accepted)
- A fully refundable textbook deposit of $75 must be presented on the first day of class in order to recieve a textbook. $75 will be returned upon receipt of the textbook due to withdrawal or course completion.
- NSF cheques: $20 NSF fee
- Classes may be cancelled due to low enrolment (full refund if applicable)
Refunds for non-credit courses are available up to and including
Wednesday, July
2nd, 2008 only for ESL and Monday, July 7th for Music
(a 10% administration of total fees paid will apply)
Reports:
- Report cards to be picked up on last day of classes
- Course credit / final mark will be withheld until the textbook
is returned
Provincial Exams:
- To be written at Brookswood Secondary School, 20902 - 37A Avenue (schedule below)
- No walk-ins will be accepted
Course Cancellations:
- Courses may be cancelled due to low enrolment. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Secondary Full Credit Courses at Brookswood Secondary
**ALL COURSES OFFERED SUBJECT TO SUFFICIENT ENROLLMENT**
- Courses are 94.5 hours - students receive full credit, percentage and letter grade
- This provides students with a comparable number of hours of instruction to courses taken during the regular school year
Course Length: 27 sessions (94.5 hours), Wednesday, July 2 to Friday, August 8, 2008
Times: 8:00am – 11:45am with one 15 minute break per day
Fees:
$75 Refundable Textbook Deposit (A cheque for $75 must be submitted on the first day of class to receive a textbook - $75 will be refunded upon return of the text)
$400 Tuition for Graduated Adult Students (19 yrs or older as of July 1, 2008)
$690 Tuition for International Students + $75 Text Deposit
Intended for students who:
- Have never taken the course and have a "C+" standing in the prerequisite course
(EN 10, 11 & 12 require a "B" in the prerequisite course) and/or a
letter of permission from their home school
- Failed a course or received a low pass and wish to improve their course percentage mark
- Want to improve their Provincial Examination score by thoroughly preparing for an August examination retake
- Are adult students (19 and over) who wish to complete a secondary course

All Provincial Exams are designed to be completed within two hours. Students are permitted an additional hour, if required, to complete their
examinations.
ELECTRONIC EXAMS:
**NOTE** - Most Provincial exams will only be offered electronically this summer. This means that you will be completing exams in a computer lab at the school rather than on paper.
REWRITES:
Students not enrolled in Summer School wishing to rewrite their exams, must register to write through their home school counselling office. Not all students may be accommodated doe to computer availability.
Secondary Academic Completion (Remedial) Courses
**ALL COURSES OFFERED SUBJECT TO SUFFICIENT ENROLLMENT**
- Intended for students who have failed the course during the
current year and have achieved at least 35%. By retaking the failed
course as an academic completion course, students will be able to earn the
course credit and a maximum mark of 61% and "C" for transcript
purposes.
- Academic completion courses cover 60% of the required learning outcomes for a particular course.
- Academic Completion summer courses, which are short and intensive, are
not the appropriate learning environment
for learners who require extra support or learning assistance.
Course Length: 20 sessions from Monday, July 7 to Friday, August 1, 2008
Times: 8:00 am - 10:15 am OR 10:30 am - 12:45 pm (the early time may
be filled first)
Fees:

SPECIAL INFORMATION re: English 10, Principles of Math 10 & Science 10
- Provincial exam results can be accessed by logging on to the Ministry of Education website: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams. Note that you will need to log on to the site prior to the posted dates to create your account using your PEN number.
- June results will be posted July 31st.
- August results will be posted September 8th.
- If a student withdraws from a Grade 10 Summer School Academic Completion course after receiving their June final marks, there is no refund for course fees
- There is a one week gap between the end of Academic Completion courses and the Provincial exams. Students intending on rewriting their exam may wish to consider taking the longer full credit course in these subjects in order to finish closer to the exam date.

and the cultural and social issues relating to Canada.

Langley Summer Music Centre
This highly successful three-week music program is open to elementary
and secondary students (must have completed Grade 5):
- Beginning Band
- Advanced Concert Band
- Chamber Ensembles (duets, trios, quartets, etc.)
- Jazz Band
- Jazz Combo (minimum 2 years experience)
The Langley Summer Music Centre:
- provides a unique opportunity for instrumental performance
- offers opportunities for a beginner or an advanced player to
improve playing, sight reading, musicianship and improvisational
skills and to learn to play another instrument.
- encourages students with one year of experience, or the equivalent,
the opportunity to participate in jazz band for their first "jazz
encounter".
- includes 45 hours of intensive playing during the Music Centre
- includes inspirational guest performances
- Some students have advanced almost an entire year of band in three
weeks!
